SRINAGAR: An NIA-designated court in Pulwama on Thursday convicted three persons and awarded them jail terms for providing shelter and support to terrorists, the police said.
A police spokesman said that in what was described as a significant legal breakthrough, the police in Pulwama secured the conviction of the accused in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
According to the spokesman, the conviction was recorded by the Special Court designated under the NIA Act, Pulwama, in connection with FIR No 151/2022 of Police Station Pulwama, registered under Sections 307 of the IPC, 7 and 27 of the Arms Act, and Sections 16, 18, 19, 20, 38 and 39 of the UA(P) Act.
The court found the accused guilty of providing shelter and logistical support to terrorists of a banned organisation, the police said. Mehraj Ud Din Mir was convicted under Sections 19 and 39 of the UA(P) Act and sentenced to three years’ simple imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 19, and three years and 10 months’ imprisonment under Section 39, with the sentences to run concurrently.
Firdous Ahmad Bhat and Irshad Ahmad Malik were convicted under Section 39 of the UA(P) Act and sentenced to three years and 10 months’ imprisonment each. The court ordered that the period already spent by the accused in custody be set off against their sentences, the spokesman said.
The police said the conviction was the result of a professional investigation and effective prosecution by Jammu and Kashmir Police, reiterating the force’s commitment to taking firm action against individuals involved in supporting terrorist activities.
