The Jammu and Kashmir Government Tuesday said that the students who will appear in the NEET exams will be selected and counselled by the state run Board of Professional Entrance Exams (BOPEE) and not the NEET management as was being projected.

Addressing a press conference here, J&K Government spokesperson and minister for education, Naeem Akhtar said, “NEET will only conduct the exams and the selections would be done by BOPEE as it was doing for past several years. It will bring transparency into the system and it will only act as the test conducting authority.”

The government spokesperson said that the eligibility conditions would be strictly under the state law and not the central law. “Being the state subject of J&K is a necessary clause when it comes to taking an admission in any professional college in the state. Therefore, there is no chance of taking students from other states in the state institutes,” he said.

“The Law Department has studied the SC order and found that the present position in our medical colleges will continue to remain as such,” Akhtar said.

Further, he asserted, “reservations will continue and the reservations of all the communities and minority institutions will remain intact.”

Akhtar said, “NEET won’t affect the right of students of Jammu and Kashmir. BOPEE will continue to exist and it is them who will do counselling and allot medical colleges to students. NEET’s role would be limited to determination of standards and conduct of exam.”

“Even if,” he said, “10000 students qualify after appearing NEET, only students from J&K would be selected for state medical colleges.”
