SRINAGAR: In a significant development ahead of the upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) has seen yet another prominent exit. Tahir Sayeed, the party spokesperson and grandson of the respected veteran leader Moulana Masoodi, has tendered his resignation from both his post and basic membership of the party. The resignation, addressed to party president Mehbooba Mufti, was made public through Sayeed’s official Twitter account.
In his brief resignation letter, Sayeed expressed his sorrow at having to part ways with the party. “It is with a heavy heart that I write this unpleasant letter of resignation from the post of spokesperson and basic membership of the party. It was a great learning experience to serve the party and our people. I wish you and the party the very best,” he wrote.
However, it was the closing lines of his resignation that caught widespread attention. Quoting an Urdu couplet, Sayeed wrote: “Tere badanay ka dukh nahin hai mujay – Main you mere yaqeen pa sharminda houn,” which translates to, “I have no issue with your change, but I am ashamed of my trust (in you).”
The decision to step down comes amid a wave of discontent within the party, with several members reportedly upset over being denied a mandate and party tickets to contest in the upcoming elections. While the party is getting some old faces back, it is losing cadres who had kept the show going in post-2019.
Sayeed’s departure is seen as a significant loss for the party, given his lineage and role as a spokesperson.
The resignation underscores the turbulent times within JKPDP, as loyal members express their disillusionment with the current direction of the party. As the region heads towards elections, the impact of these exits on the party’s performance remains to be seen. The resignation came within hours after PDP issued the list of its candidates in a particular Kupwara segment.
