The Jammu and Kashmir Government Tuesday denied news reports which had claimed that an elderly woman from the old city here died due to excessive use of pepper gas by forces.

“There is no such information with us which would have suggested that she died due to pepper gas. The lady has died due to suffocation as she was an asthma patient”, Principal Secretary Home, Suresh Kumar told Srinagar based news agency KNS.

Pertinently, a 60 year old lady named Hajira resident of Aali Kadal area of down town Srinagar was brought dead to the SMHS Hospital here after she suffered a sudden asthma stroke reportedly due to inhalation of pepper gas. According to medical reports of the woman, she was suffering from chronic obstructive airway disease.

To a query on news reports that forces were not properly following the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) while dealing with protestors and stone palters, the Home Secretary said, “Officers on the ground can answer it better. They are the people who should be asked, but if any violation is reported, we will look into the matter”.

On possibility of release of youth who have been detained on the charges of being involved in stone pelting, the Home secretary said, “Government has already granted amnesty to 2010 stone pelters; now regarding the recently arrested youth we will assess the situation and decide what needs to be done”.
