SRINAGAR: A helicopter crashed on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on Wednesday, killing five people, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority stated that the aircraft went down near the mountain’s Barafu Camp.
Local media reports, including Mwananchi newspaper and East Africa TV, cited Simon Maigwa, head of police in the Kilimanjaro region, saying the helicopter was on a medical rescue mission at the time of the crash. Those killed included the pilot, a doctor, a guide, and two foreign tourists. The nationalities of the tourists were not disclosed.
The incident occurred at an altitude of approximately 4,670 to 4,700 metres on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, which rises nearly 6,000 metres (20,000 ft) above sea level.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a major tourist destination, attracting around 50,000 climbers each year.
