Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday termed the killing of a Kashmir University professor as “an answer to those who claim jobs and development are the solution to the violence & alienation in Kashmir”.

Dr Muhammad Rafi Bhat, who taught at the sociology department of the varsity, was killed in a gunfight along four other militants of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in Shopian today. He was reported missing on Friday.

Taking to social networking site Twitter, Omar wrote “Sadly this is also an answer to those who claim jobs & development are the solutions to the violence & alienation in Kashmir. This is another tragic development in a steady stream of tragedies in Kashmir.”

Five militants including top Hizb commander and close aide of Burhan Wani, Saddam Padder, were killed in the gunfight at Badigam village of Shopian.

During the gunfight, parents of Bhat were also called to persuade their son to surrender, but he had turned down the offer.
