Religion Must Not Define Education: Javed Rana on SMVD College Row

SRINAGAR: Cabinet Minister Javaid Rana on Wednesday described the row over admissions at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College in Reasi as disturbing and detrimental to democratic values, asserting that religion should never define access to education.

Speaking to reporters, Rana said the controversy had created a negative impression and could push society towards a regressive mindset. He stressed that linking education with religious identity was unhealthy and contrary to the principles of a democratic system.

“This is not a constructive debate. In a democracy, education cannot be viewed through the prism of religion. Such thinking sends the wrong message and takes society in the wrong direction,” he said.

The minister cautioned that controversies of this nature set a dangerous precedent. “Once education is communalised, it weakens the very foundation of unity. Education is meant to bring people together, not divide them,” he added.

Rana also criticised the BJP, alleging that the party’s role in the matter raised serious questions about its intent. “The BJP’s actions and intentions are questionable. While the rest of the world is progressing, we remain trapped in mandir–masjid politics,” he remarked.

He said an excessive emphasis on religious identity diverts attention from pressing public issues. “We are dwelling on the past and ignoring present realities. This is not the path to progress for any society,” Rana said.

Emphasising a development-oriented approach, the minister said governance should prioritise employment, education and overall growth rather than identity-driven politics, warning that continued polarisation would damage social cohesion and undermine institutional credibility.

The controversy erupted after the medical college allotted 43 of its 50 MBBS seats to Muslim students, leaving seven for Hindu students, triggering protests by certain Hindu organisations. College authorities, however, clarified that all admissions were made strictly in accordance with NEET guidelines and that all selected candidates were residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
