SRINAGAR: Russia has said it is not neutral in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, with Moscow expressing support for Tehran, the country’s ambassador to the United Kingdom stated in an interview with Sky News.
Speaking to Trevor Phillips, Russian ambassador Andrei Kelin said Russia was “not neutral” in the situation and described Moscow as “supportive” of Iran amid rising tensions involving the United States and Israel.
Kelin criticised Western accusations that place sole responsibility for the conflict on Iran, calling the narrative “unfair”. He argued that the actions of the United States and Israel, which he claimed triggered the confrontation, were not being sufficiently acknowledged.
The envoy said Russia views the military actions against Iran negatively and maintained that Tehran was responding to earlier attacks.
His remarks come as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate following recent military exchanges between Iran, Israel and the United States, fuelling concerns about a broader regional conflict.
Kelin also called for an immediate halt to hostilities and urged a return to diplomatic negotiations to resolve the crisis.
Meanwhile, the war between the United States, Israel and Iran entered its ninth day on Sunday with fresh strikes, drone attacks and widening regional fallout. Fighting that began with joint US and Israeli strikes on Iranian territory on February 28 has rapidly expanded into a broader confrontation stretching across the Gulf, Iraq and Lebanon.
