A Kashmiri scholar has been declared innocent in Sabarmati blast case after sixteen long years of detention.
Twocircles.net, news portal reported that a session court in Barabanki (Uttar Pradesh) on Saturday acquitted Gulzar Ahmed Wani for lack of evidence in the Sabarmati express train blast case.
A resident of Thapar, Pattan in Baramulla district, Wani was detained in 2001 when he was just a 26-year-old graduate pursuing doctoral degree from Department of Arabic, Aligarh Muslim University.
“Wani along with another accused Mubeen were released by the Barabanki session court of all the charges in Sabarmati blast case by the court today,” the report said.
Wani was facing at least fourteen FIRs and alleged to be involved in numerous blasts and conspiracies in different police stations of Delhi, Maharashtra and UP. He stands acquitted in all the cases.
A bench comprising of chief justice of Supreme Court, J S Khehar, along with justice D Y Chandrachud, termed incarceration of Gulzar a shame.
Last when a bail application on behalf of Wani was moved to two bench justices, the Uttar Pradesh government was warned to complete examination of witness by November 1 otherwise it will grant bail to Wani.
“Out of 11 cases, he has been acquitted in 10 cases. What a shame! The problem is that you want to keep him inside the jail but not complete the trial. He was acquitted in all other cases,” the bench had observed.
