SRINAGAR: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) scientist Prof Syed Mudasir Andrabi has been awarded the prestigious JC Bose Fellowship, one of India’s highest scientific honours, in recognition of his contributions to biotechnology, innovation and translational research.
Prof Andrabi, Professor and Head of the Division of Animal Biotechnology at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, received the fellowship for his sustained excellence in scientific research, technological innovation and leadership. The fellowship is conferred on scientists whose work has significantly advanced science and technology in the country.
An internationally recognised researcher, Prof Andrabi has worked extensively in animal biotechnology, molecular diagnostics, vaccine development, regenerative medicine, bioengineering and translational biomedical research. His research focuses on developing technologies to address challenges in human and animal health while supporting agricultural development.
He is currently leading several research projects funded by national agencies, including the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). His ongoing research covers antimicrobial resistance, gene editing, regenerative medicine, vaccine development and the One Health approach.
Among his notable innovations are SalOvac, a recombinant Lactobacillus-based vaccine against poultry salmonellosis, the RealTick Multiplex Real-Time PCR Diagnostic Kit for human rickettsial infections, LungHealth-MDx, a digital PCR-based epigenetic diagnostic platform, as well as advanced burn recovery bandages and regenerative biomaterials. He also holds 13 granted patents, including two in the United States, besides several international patent applications and licensed technologies.
Congratulating Prof Andrabi, SKUAST-K Vice-Chancellor Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai said the fellowship reflects the university’s growing stature in scientific research and innovation. He said the recognition would encourage researchers at the university to pursue high-impact science and accelerate the development of technologies benefiting agriculture, livestock and society.
The university described the fellowship as a milestone for both SKUAST-K and Jammu and Kashmir, saying it reinforces the institution’s emergence as a national centre for translational research, innovation and technology development.
