The higher reaches of Kashmir witnessed heavy snowfall, with Zojila receiving over 10 inches and Sonamarg recording between 8 and 10 inches of fresh snow. These areas have transformed into winter wonderlands, delighting both locals and tourists. In contrast, the plains saw lighter accumulations, with Budgam’s Khan Sahib and Kupwara’s Hachmarg recording 2 inches of snow each.

Rajpora tehsil in Pulwama district displayed a mix of snowfall levels. Sangerwani topped the charts with 4 inches, followed by Abhama with 3.5 to 4 inches and Achgoza with 3 inches. However, some areas like Drabgam and Rajpora experienced only trace amounts of snow.

The snowfall extended to parts of Shopian, where the main town recorded 1 to 2 inches. Bandipora and Vailoo in Kokernag saw light dustings of snow, adding to the region’s winter charm.

The meteorological department forecasts cloudy weather over the next 12 hours, with isolated spells of rain or snow likely in some areas. However, no major weather activity is expected during this period. From tomorrow onwards, a week of predominantly dry weather is anticipated, offering respite to residents and travellers.

The fresh snowfall has been a boon for Kashmir’s agriculture, particularly for apple orchards, as it marks the beginning of snowpack accumulation crucial for irrigation in the upcoming seasons. For the tourism sector, the snowfall in destinations like Sonamarg and Zojila signals the start of the winter tourism season, attracting visitors eager to experience snow sports and scenic tours.

While the snowfall has brought joy, it also serves as a reminder for caution. Authorities and residents are advised to be vigilant, particularly in higher altitudes, where slippery roads and potential travel disruptions could pose challenges.

The snowfall underscores the region’s unique beauty and the challenges of winter in Kashmir, blending opportunities for tourism with the need for preparedness.
