SRINAGAR: Preparations for Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, have commenced in Srinagar, with people in the city hoisting black banners and flags. Muharram holds great significance for Muslims worldwide, as it marks the arrival of the new year in the Islamic calendar.

The pinnacle of Muharram is the tenth day, known as Ashura, which stands as a reminder of the tragic events that unfolded in the plains of Karbala centuries ago. It was on this day that Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), along with his loyal companions, embraced martyrdom in their unwavering stand against oppression and tyranny. Their sacrifice exemplified unwavering faith, unyielding courage, and an indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.

In various locations across the city, large black banners bearing quotes of Hazrat Hussain (RA) have been prominently displayed. These banners can be seen adorning the road stretch from Saida Kadal to Zadibal, as well as in both the downtown and uptown areas of Srinagar. The visual impact of these banners serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the enduring lessons of courage, faith, and devotion that resonate from his martyrdom.

Local residents have expressed their admiration for the youth who have taken the initiative to hoist the black banners. One individual stated, “The youth are inspired by the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and are tying the hoisting on streets in Srinagar.”

The presence of these banners serves as a visual reminder of the significance of Muharram and the enduring legacy of Hazrat Hussain (RA) that continues to inspire generations.

Another resident from Alamgari Bazar, emphasised the importance of reflecting on the lessons of sacrifice and unity that Muharram imparts.

With the rising number of black banners throughout Srinagar, he urged the youth to understand and embrace these teachings during this sacred month. The act of hoisting these banners not only serves as a symbolic gesture but also acts as a catalyst for fostering a sense of community and shared purpose among the people of Srinagar.

As preparations for Muharram continue, the city of Srinagar bears witness to the solemn remembrance of Hazrat Hussain (RA) and his companions.
