SRINAGAR: In Jammu and Kashmir, more than 54 percent of academic positions in DIETs and nearly 39 percent of positions in SCERT are vacant against the sanctioned positions.

According to official figures the vacancy of academic positions includes 219 in District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and 62 in SCERT.

The official documents regarding vacancies in TEIs state, “There are 219 (54.07%) vacancies of academic positions against the sanctioned posts in DIET and 62 (38.99%) in SCERT.”

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has accordingly stated that considering the important role of these institutions in empowering teachers, the vacant positions in the DIETs may be filled on priority.

“In addition, it was informed that the release of funds under the DIET of Excellence scheme will be contingent upon the filling up of existing vacancies by 30th June 2024,” it reads.

In the last week of April, local news agency KNO reported that the MoE has said that in Jammu and Kashmir, ‘hundreds of government-run schools have zero student enrolments. Besides, the majority of the institutions have less than 50 student enrolments.

Moreover, official documents and latest figures state that more than 18 percent of government schools at the elementary level here have an adverse Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR).

Officials from Jammu and Kashmir in 2023 had said that the overall count of public schools had reduced by nearly 19 percent owing to the ‘zero or low enrolment of students in government schools’—(KNO)
