SRINAGAR: Amid dry weather conditions, several areas across Kashmir have witnessed a heatwave, with Srinagar, the summer capital of the region, recording its second hottest April day on record at 30.8°C on Tuesday.
Pahalgam recorded its all-time highest April temperature at 27.8°C, breaking the previous record of 27.4°C set on April 4, 1979.
Qazigund, the gateway to south Kashmir, recorded a maximum temperature of 29.4°C, while Kupwara reported 29.2°C, the data showed.
Kokernag recorded a daytime temperature of 28.2°C. Gulmarg, the popular ski resort, reported 22.2°C.
The weatherman had earlier predicted a dry spell from April 27 and had indicated the possibility of a heatwave at a few places across Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days.
Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said the weather is expected to remain generally dry from tomorrow until May 1. He added that there is a possibility of light rain and thundershowers at isolated places on May 2 and 3.
The MeT has also said that generally hot and dry weather is expected over the Jammu division, with heatwave conditions likely at isolated places over the next few days. People have been advised to stay hydrated, drink plenty of fluids, remain indoors, and avoid working outdoors during peak hours (12–3 pm). (KNO)
