SRINAGAR: In a prestigious ceremony held in New Delhi on Monday,  the President of India conferred the Padma Shri award upon Ghulam Nabi Dar for his exceptional contributions to the field of Art, representing the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ghulam Nabi Dar, a skilled wood carving artisan in his seventies, embarked on his artistic journey at the tender age of 10. His lifelong dedication to woodcraft has blossomed into a remarkable talent, earning him acclaim both locally and nationally.

Born on April 3, 1957, Dar’s artistic expression reflects the exquisite beauty of Kashmir’s landscapes through intricate wood carvings. His distinctive designs, inspired by the natural splendour of the region, have earned him widespread admiration for their meticulous craftsmanship and aesthetic allure.

Dar’s artistic skills were first recognised with a State award in 1984, followed by international exhibitions in Indonesia, Thailand, Baghdad, and Lichtenstein, Germany. In 1995-96 when he was honoured with the prestigious National award for his exceptional skill and dedication to his craft.
