Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reiterated the need for putting in place a comprehensive city mobility plan for the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar to streamline the traffic and make plying of transport hassle free.

“There is urgent need of addressing traffic management in the twin capitals of the State”, Omar Abdullah said and emphasized on coordinated efforts by transport, housing, R&B and other concerned departments to move ahead in this direction.

Taking a power point presentation of the draft mobility plans prepared by RITES for Srinagar and Jammu cities at a meeting here, the Chief Minister asked the Planning Department to obtain input from various state departments concerned with the project so that the government moves forward on the reports presented by the RITES in this regard.

In the draft, city mobility plan, RITES has identified areas requiring focus attention to improve and upgrade traffic management. It has also suggested short and long term measures for improvement of transport scenario in the cities. It has flagged critical infrastructure needs for upgrading mobility within the cities keeping in view the traffic growth and consequent challenges upto 2030.

RITES has also suggested implementation of mass transport system like Monorail, Bus Rapid Transport System, In-land Water Ways transport system, development of parking spaces and widening of roads.
