SRINAGAR: Sunita Chandra, wife of senior journalist Ashwani Kumar, passed away in New Delhi on January 11, 2025, following a prolonged illness. She was 61. Chandra breathed her last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with her husband and other family members by her side.

Sunita Chandra, known for her dedication to social work, made a significant impact through her efforts with the Pahal project under Damodar Sati Udyog Sanstha. Over the years, she helped educate more than 2,000 children from slum areas across various parts of the country, including Jammu.
She is survived by her husband, Ashwani Kumar—former Bureau Chief of Aaj Tak and ex-president of the Press Club of Jammu—and her two daughters, Tania and Tanisha. She is also mourned by extended family members, including her brother-in-law Dr Shiv Kumar, her sister-in-law Veena Chandra, and several other close relatives.
The cremation will take place on January 12, 2025, at Bhagwati Nagar Cremation Ground near the Fourth Tawi Bridge in Jammu, after noon.
The Press Club of Jammu (PCJ) expressed deep condolences over the loss. In a statement, PCJ President Sanjeev Pargal conveyed heartfelt sympathies to Ashwani Kumar and his family, offering prayers for strength to endure this profound loss. The club’s staff also expressed their grief, remembering Sunita Chandra’s inspiring contributions to society and her unwavering commitment to helping the underprivileged.
