SRINAGAR: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday slapped an additional 25 per cent tariff on goods coming from India as penalty for New Delhi’s continued buying of Russian oil, reports Reuters.
Trump signed an executive order imposing the additional tariff less than 14 hours before his initial tariffs were to come into effect. After the order, the total tariff on Indian goods, barring a small exemption list, will be 50 per cent. While the initial duty becomes effective on August 7, the additional levy will come into effect after 21 days.
The move threatens to further complicate US-Indian relations and comes shortly after a Indian government source as per The Statesman report, said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit China for the first time in over seven years later this month. US-India ties are facing their most serious crisis in years after talks with India failed to produce a trade agreement.
Meanwhile, Shortly after US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25 percent tariff against India, the Indian government has stated it will move to “protect national interest.”

In its official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs has called the additional tariffs and targeting of New Delhi “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”
“We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India,” said MEA.
“It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,” the Indian government added further.
