Dr Saalis Maqbool and Dr Abir Aijaz, who work in the Acute Medicine Department at Weston General Hospital, are among a select group whose research was chosen for presentation at the prestigious international medical gathering. According to their employer, Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, their paper was one of only eight worldwide selected for the honour.

In a congratulatory message posted on LinkedIn, the Trust described the achievement as a testament to the “talent, innovation and expertise” within its medical teams.

The recognition places the two doctors in an international scientific forum that brings together cardiovascular specialists, clinicians and researchers to discuss advances in the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

The European Society of Cardiology Congress 2026 was held in Munich from August 28 to 31. The annual congress is among the major international meetings in cardiovascular medicine, providing a platform for the presentation of research and the exchange of clinical experience.

The ESC’s official online platform lists a presentation by Dr Saalis Maqbool titled “Milky effusion, Murky diagnosis: a rare case of chylopericardium causing cardiac tamponade.” Chylopericardium is a rare condition in which lymphatic fluid accumulates in the sac surrounding the heart. In some cases, the resulting pressure can cause cardiac tamponade, a potentially life-threatening emergency that impairs the heart’s ability to fill with blood.

The presentation highlights the importance of recognising unusual clinical conditions and sharing diagnostic experience with the wider medical community. Case-based research can help clinicians discuss complex presentations and consider approaches to diagnosis and management.

Dr Maqbool works as a registrar in acute medicine at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. His professional interests include preventive cardiology, heart failure and the early diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease.

The achievement is a source of professional pride for Kashmir’s medical community, highlighting the contribution of doctors of Kashmiri origin working in international healthcare institutions. It also underscores the role of clinical research in complementing patient care and advancing medical knowledge.

Oral presentations at international congresses provide researchers with an opportunity to discuss their findings with specialists from different countries, invite professional scrutiny and contribute to wider medical debate. Selection for such a presentation represents recognition of the work submitted, although it does not by itself establish that a finding has changed clinical practice.

For aspiring doctors and researchers in Kashmir, the achievement offers an example of the opportunities available to medical professionals who pursue scientific inquiry alongside clinical responsibilities.

The recognition of Dr Maqbool and Dr Aijaz at the ESC Congress highlights the contribution that clinicians working across borders can make to the exchange of medical knowledge and the continuing effort to improve patient care.
