SRINAGAR: The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed grave concern over the United States’ military action in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, warning that the move sets a dangerous precedent with potentially serious regional consequences.

In a statement issued by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Secretary-General António Guterres said he was deeply alarmed by the operation and worried about its implications for international stability. He voiced particular concern that the principles of international law may not have been upheld during the action.
Guterres stressed the need for full respect for international law, including the provisions of the UN Charter, and underscored that adherence to these rules is essential in maintaining global order.
The Secretary-General also called for an inclusive dialogue in Venezuela, urging that any political process be conducted in line with human rights standards and the rule of law.
President Nicolás Maduro and his wife have meanwhile been indicted by federal authorities in New York on charges including narco-terrorism and conspiracy to possess destructive devices against the United States.
