SRINAGAR: The United Nations’ top envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, highlighted the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance and swift economic recovery in the country following significant political changes. Pedersen’s comments came on December 15, 2024, after his arrival in Damascus, just a week after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime by rebel forces.

Speaking to the press, Pedersen acknowledged the immense change in Syria, which has sparked hope for many, but also noted the considerable challenges that remain. He emphasised the need for a Syrian-led political process that includes all factions, urging that the new government focus on restoring state institutions, security, and service delivery.

Pedersen stressed the importance of ensuring that Syria receives immediate humanitarian aid, both for the people within the country and for refugees wishing to return. He also called for a quick resolution to the economic crisis, hoping for an end to sanctions to support Syria’s reconstruction efforts.

In addition to humanitarian and economic challenges, the UN envoy pointed out the critical need for justice and accountability for crimes committed during the conflict. He underscored the importance of a credible justice system to prevent revenge and ensure lasting peace in the region.

Syrians have celebrated the regime’s fall, gathering in Damascus to mark the historic moment. As the country faces a new chapter, Pedersen remains hopeful that international cooperation will play a crucial role in helping Syria rebuild and recover.
