US Halts Immigrant Visa Processing for 75 Countries

SRINAGAR: The United States Government has announced a suspension of immigrant visa processing for nationals from 75 countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, citing concerns over migrants becoming “public charges” on the American welfare system.

In a statement, the US State Department said the pause will remain in effect until authorities can ensure that new immigrants will not unduly rely on public assistance funded by American taxpayers. The decision follows comments by US President Donald Trump, who said no country can sustainably absorb large numbers of migrants while covering the costs of their education and health care.

President Trump further stated that his administration will cease financial payments to so-called sanctuary cities — jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement — from February 1,  onward, intensifying pressure on local governments.

Under the policy, immigrant visa applications from designated countries will not be processed until the administration completes reviews intended to prevent new arrivals from becoming dependent on public benefits. The move is part of a broader effort by the US Government to tighten immigration controls and reduce potential fiscal burdens linked to incoming migrants.

Pakistan and Bangladesh are among the 75 countries affected by the visa freeze, although the full list has not been published by the State Department. Critics argue the policy will disrupt family reunification and harm diplomatic relations, while supporters say it protects US economic interests.

The development comes amid ongoing national debates in the United States over immigration policy, public spending and the social obligations of the federal government. Affected visa applicants and their representatives are expected to seek further clarification from US diplomatic missions in the coming days.
