SRINAGAR: In a momentous session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah renewed his pledge to champion the region’s identity, autonomy, and the welfare of its people. Addressing a full house on the final day of the 5-day inaugural session, Abdullah spoke of the “historic significance” of the gathering and emphasised that his government’s agenda would be driven by the aspirations and needs of Jammu and Kashmir’s citizens.

Reflecting on his tenure and the profound changes that have taken place since he last held office, Abdullah remarked, “The last time I stood here as Chief Minister, we were a state with our own flag, constitution, and a unique identity within this country. That was taken from us.” While acknowledging the sorrow of this loss, he expressed his renewed commitment to work tirelessly for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Thanking voters for their significant turnout in recent elections, Abdullah stressed his administration’s commitment to serve all citizens, including those who did not participate in the electoral process. “This Assembly belongs to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, to each and every citizen. We are here to serve all, not just those who voted or participated in this election,” he affirmed.

During the session’s Motion of Thanks on the Lieutenant Governor’s Address, Abdullah highlighted the symbolic restoration of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir, following years of governance under Lieutenant Governor’s rule. He referenced challenges, recalling how the Assembly complex had once been reduced to a storage facility, and reflected on times when he and other leaders faced restrictions. “Our Assembly complex, where elected representatives sat, was reduced to a storage facility. But today, members have reclaimed their rightful seats,” he said.

Abdullah shared his gratitude towards the Lieutenant Governor’s address, noting that many doubted the elections would take place at all. “A photograph surfaced on my phone today, bringing back memories of a time when I was a guest at the J&K State Guest House—not by choice. What was our crime? We sought change through democratic means, holding the national flag and abiding by the Constitution,” he reflected. Abdullah stressed the importance of constructive debate on critical issues, including the restoration of statehood and constitutional safeguards, lamenting the disruptive drama that overshadowed meaningful discourse.

Reflecting on the Assembly’s last significant resolution—on GST implementation—Abdullah voiced frustration over lost fiscal autonomy, a sentiment intensified by the passage of the Goods and Services Tax Act in 2017. “We once had the authority to impose taxes based on our own needs, but that was taken with GST’s introduction,” he said, criticising those who now wield banners about Article 370 but were complicit during those decisions.

The chief minister clarified that the recent resolution upholding Jammu and Kashmir’s unique status was not a compromise. “This resolution is a message, reaffirming that Jammu and Kashmir’s status must be respected,” Abdullah stated, adding that the language of the resolution was carefully crafted to keep avenues open for future constitutional autonomy. He expressed hope that future central governments would restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and called for sustained dedication to this goal.

Addressing the season, Abdullah highlighted efforts to secure resources for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, including electricity provisions, increased rations, and subsidies for essential services. He commended recent measures such as a change in the school examination schedule, describing them as necessary adjustments to meet regional needs and enhance local governance. Abdullah also announced ongoing recruitment processes, with plans to expedite hiring for public service roles.

Speaking on issues of public security, he acknowledged the balance required between military operations and minimising civilian disruption, particularly on the region’s highways. He emphasised a “compassionate approach” in law enforcement, especially concerning minor cases involving youth, and encouraged humane practices in verification processes. “True peace cannot be achieved by force alone; it is built through trust and genuine partnership,” he stated, underscoring his administration’s commitment to creating a secure yet equitable environment for the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chief Minister’s remarks concluded with a powerful affirmation of his commitment to preserving the dignity, identity, and aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir’s people. He assured residents that local resources would be safeguarded against external commercialisation, declaring, “Our crown jewels, like Pahalgam and Gulmarg, are not for sale.”

As he looked to the future, Abdullah reaffirmed his resolve to secure a prosperous, autonomous Jammu and Kashmir. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve to live with honour and dignity, and we will honour our promises. This is our commitment to the state and its people,” he declared, pledging to work for a Jammu and Kashmir that reflects the aspirations of its people.
