Zojila Shivers at –17°C as Cold Wave Tightens Grip on Jammu Kashmir 

   

SRINAGAR: Cold wave conditions continued across Jammu and Kashmir on last night, with most parts of the Kashmir Valley recording sub-zero minimum temperatures, while Zojila Pass remained the coldest place at a severe minus 17 degrees Celsius.

Data compiled by Kashmir Weather showed that Awantipora recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the Valley at minus 3.8°C, followed by Pulwama at minus 3.2°C. Pampore and Baramulla registered minus 1.8°C each, while Shopian recorded minus 1.5°C. Srinagar city settled at 0.2°C, with the Srinagar Airport touching the freezing point.

Kupwara recorded a minimum of minus 1.0°C, Anantnag minus 0.3°C, Budgam and Bandipora minus 0.8°C each, and Ganderbal minus 0.1°C. Among tourist destinations, Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded 0.4°C and 1.6°C respectively, while Sonamarg stood at 2.1°C. Kulgam logged 2.0°C, Kokernag 1.8°C and Qazigund 0.8°C. The Zethan Rafiabad weather station was reported to be non-functional.

In the Jammu region, night temperatures remained relatively higher, with Jammu city recording 11.0°C and the Jammu Airport 11.5°C. Katra recorded 12.1°C, Banihal 5.7°C, Bhaderwah 5.0°C and Rajouri 3.0°C, while other areas ranged between 6°C and 10°C.

In Ladakh, Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.4°C, while data for Kargil and the Nubra Valley was unavailable.

Meteorological officials said the prolonged dry weather across Kashmir is likely to break in the coming days, with a possible wet spell expected to coincide with the onset of Chillai-Kalan.
