100-Day Anti-Drug Drive Records 16.37 Lakh Events, 942 Arrests Across Jammu Kashmir

   

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday said its ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt JK Abhiyaan’ has recorded major gains under the 100-day anti-drug campaign, with more than 16.37 lakh awareness programmes conducted, 942 arrests made and over one crore people mobilised across the Union Territory as part of a multi-agency effort to combat substance abuse.

According to official figures, the campaign has intensified action across awareness generation, rehabilitation, treatment, surveillance and law enforcement, with authorities describing it as a whole-of-government response aimed at dismantling drug networks and strengthening community-based prevention systems.

As part of the public outreach initiative, authorities organised 16,37,484 awareness events across Jammu and Kashmir, drawing participation from over one crore people. The programmes included mega padyatras, roadshows, school and college campaigns, village-level awareness drives, signature campaigns, youth engagement activities, sports events, cultural programmes, seminars, counselling sessions and social media advocacy drives focused on highlighting the dangers of drug abuse.

Mental health and counselling services were also expanded under the campaign. Through the Tele-MANAS and counselling support initiative, authorities received 3,572 calls from individuals seeking psychological assistance and guidance related to mental health and substance abuse.

The Health Department’s addiction treatment facilities registered 58,603 patients, including 58,138 receiving OPD services and 465 undergoing intensive inpatient treatment, while 192 patients were treated and discharged.

Rehabilitation centres operated by the Social Welfare Department treated 634 patients, provided counselling to 1,055 individuals, recorded 29 recoveries, and currently continue rehabilitation support for 851 active patients.

Police-run de-addiction and counselling centres registered 451 patients, conducted counselling for 786 individuals, reported 138 recoveries, and are monitoring 363 active cases.

On the enforcement front, police registered 850 FIRs under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act during the campaign. A total of 942 persons were arrested, including 293 drug peddlers, while 49 drug hotspots were identified for targeted intervention.

Financial investigations into narcotics-linked assets also intensified, with authorities sealing or demolishing 55 houses linked to drug traffickers. They seized or attached 71 immovable properties worth approximately Rs 4,632.17 lakh, demolished 34 properties valued at around Rs 1,648.50 lakh, and seized 42 movable properties worth Rs 214.93 lakh.

Regulatory action included the suspension or cancellation of 414 driving licences, cancellation of 13 vehicle registration certificates, suspension of 118 drug store licences, cancellation of two drug store licences, processing of 1,285 Aadhaar cancellation applications, and initiation of 119 passport impoundment cases.

During recovery operations, enforcement agencies seized 6,416.070 grams and 8,019 milligrams of heroin, 47,206 grams and 871 milligrams of charas, and 251,697 grams and 1,116 milligrams of ganja. Authorities also recovered 22,474 tablets, destroyed 65 kilograms of poppy plants, and eradicated poppy cultivation spread over 47 kanals.

Surveillance measures under the campaign included inspections of 6,436 chemists, installation of 6,881 CCTV cameras, and checks at 2,127 schools and hospitals.

Intelligence-led operations resulted in the examination of 386 suspects, identification of 3,045 drug peddlers and smugglers, and execution of 36 PIT-NDPS detentions.

The administration said the campaign has also witnessed large-scale public participation through padyatras and sports activities aimed at steering youth towards constructive engagement and promoting physical and mental well-being.

Officials said the campaign’s progress has been driven by coordinated efforts of government departments, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, healthcare professionals, civil society groups, religious leaders and local communities, describing the initiative as a comprehensive effort to build a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.
