At least 13 people were injured, two of them critically, when anti-India protests broke out in parts of north Kashmir on Sunday against the execution of Afzal Guru.

In Wattargam village, CRPF personnel opened fire on a group of protestors who were shouting anti-India slogans against the hanging of 2001 Parliament Attack convict Afzal Guru.

Guru who was hanged at New Delhi’s Tihar jail on Saturday morning. “Five person were injured. Two of them identified as Sajad Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Wattergam and Raees Ahmed Sheikh, who hails from Chogal, were critically injured. All the injured have been shifted to hospital for treatment,” a senior police official told Kashmir Life.

Strict curfew is in place across Kashmir valley since Saturday morning after Guru was hanged at Tihar jail. His mercy petition was hanged by Indian president Pranab Mukherjee. The authorities are fearing reprisal from civilians against the hanging and have banned cable TV news.

In Ladro village, protestors were shouting slogans against the hanging of Afzal Guru which were intercepted by government forces. “They tried to attack the residence of Javed Dar, MLA and a former minister. Forces then engaged the protestors which led to violent clashes and four persons were injured,’ a source said.

In Acchabal, Doabgah, five persons were injured in similar anti-India protests on Sunday. The forces used baton and tear gas canisters to quell the protestors who were pelting stones.

Meanwhile according to police spokesman, Five persons were injured while tackling a law and order situation at Watergam in the jurisdiction of Police station Dangiwacha.

“Five persons Ubaid Ahmad Rather, Sajad Ahmad Bhat, Mehraj-u-Din Bhat, Rayees Ahmad Sheikh and Ather sreceived injuries while tackling a law and order situation at Watergam,” said the police spokesman.

“Among the injured Ubaid and Sajad have been referred to SKIMS, Soura while the other three are being treated at the local hospital, however, Ather was discharged after being given first aid,” spokesman added.
