As many as 66 households will be spending their night in tents after their houses were destroyed in a disastrous conflagration in Dalgate on Monday. Officials said they have been given certain basics from Indian Red Cross late Monday evening.

Though 16 structures were destroyed in fire and another 12 suffered serious damage in the fire fighting exercise, the total families living in these structures were 66, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone said.

“We gave them certain basic from Red Cross which included tents, blankets and other thimgs,” Dr Lone said. “We will be giving them relief cheques worth Rs 101 thousand each under SDRF in next two days.”

Most of the affected families ave sent their kids and aged to their relatives in other localities but most of them are around, puttingup with neghbours.

The frightening fire that tool many hours to be controlled roasted alive a resident Muhammad Ramzan, a resident of Kahalpora Dalgate. Basically a resident of Tral, he was living with one of his relatives. Given his age he failed to save himself and was later recovered from debris.

Police said they are investigating the cause of the conflagration. There are various theories in circulation – one attributing the fire to LPG and another to short circuit.
