SK- Institute of Medical Sciences during floods offered hope and was the only tertiary care hospital which remained functional and provided patient care services 24X7 to the people of valley.

In a statement SKIMS PRO Sana Kulsoom said, “During the period SKIMS witnessed tremendous patient rush and emergency admissions increased manifold. However, SKIMS undauntedly faced the challenge put forth by unexpected circumstances with effective administrative measures and remained closeted to the task of care and compassion.”

“To avoid any crisis and inconvenience to the patients SKIMS created additional facilities which included creation of 160 beds within premises. Newly constructed SKIMS PATIENT SARAI was made functional as mini hospital for emergency and critically sick patients. It included day care ward where 40-50 patients per day on average received chemotherapy besides maternity patients were accommodated in it. In addition to it, newly constructed emergency extension with capacity of 22 patients was also utilized for patients,” she said.

SKIMS also received huge number of critically ill pediatric patients, on average 100-120 critically sick new born babies were admitted against the capacity of the department for 30 patients. During the last six weeks of floods 1381 critically ill neonates were admitted and 8555 seen in OPD. SKIMS administration was prompt enough to cater pediatric rush and created additional 10 bedded Pediatric ICU to accommodate sick children who also required ventilator support, the PRO added.

There was also threefold increase in maternity patient rush. From September 8th to October 15, 1027 patients were admitted and 5025 were seen in OPD. 436 cesarean were conducted. SKIMS maternity hospital has a limited capacity of 22 beds.  The commitment and performance of the administration did show the way and efficient management made things easy and convenient for patients and all the basic facilities to poor patients and patients from far flung areas were put in place. Outside sources were also utilized to mange 105 post-operative patients at govt. higher secondary school for girls Soura besides other discharged patients who couldn’t reach home.

SKIMS Medical College Bemina partially restored

SKIMS Medical College Bemina erstwhile JVC a significant part of SKIMS was submerged which affected major patient care system.  In view of this patients were shifted to SKIMS Soura for treatment up to 9th October. However, all possible efforts were made to restore the hospital on priority. The essential biomedical equipment’s, hospital furniture, drugs, surgical disposables, IV fluids were procured and within short period of time hospital was partially restored. All OPD’s were functional from 17th September 2014 and IPD (Indoor patient Department) services which were heavily affected were resumed from 10th October 2014 and almost 500 patients were operated. The regular class work was also resumed from 10th October, 2014. Also the staff including doctors, paramedics besides, MSc/BSc Nursing students were put on duty at SKIMS Soura to provide smooth and efficient patient care services.
