SRINAGAR: Authorities on Tuesday issued flood warnings in Jammu region after water levels in the Ravi, Ujh and Basanter rivers rose sharply, crossing danger marks at several points.
Officials said the overflow from Madhopur Barrage on the Ravi River has exceeded 1,00,000 cusecs, inundating low-lying areas and triggering heavy flooding in villages including Bagthali, Massos Pur, Keerian Gandial, Barni, Dhanna, Dhanore, Karyali and adjoining areas.
In Kathua district, the water level of the Ujh River is approaching the danger mark. At Panjtirthi, the current discharge stands at 78,750 cusecs against the danger level of 88,000 cusecs, while at Kathua, the flow has reached 83,834 cusecs against a danger level of 95,099 cusecs.
Meanwhile, in Samba district, the Basanter River crossed the danger mark at 9 a.m. with the water level recorded at 4.5 ft, equal to the danger threshold, with officials warning that the trend remains upward.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures. The administration said disaster response teams are on standby to assist in rescue and evacuation if required.
