SRINAGAR: Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus is reportedly considering stepping down as efforts to bring political consensus in Bangladesh remain stalled. According to BBC Bangla Service, National Citizen Party leader Nhid Islam said Yunus is unsure about continuing, citing growing political tension and lack of cooperation from parties.
Islam, who played a key role in the student-led July uprising that led to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, quoted Yunus as saying he feels cornered and unable to deliver on the promised reforms. However, no official word has come from Yunus’s office so far.
Tensions have also surfaced between the military and the interim government over the timeline for parliamentary elections. In the past week, the government disbanded Hasina’s Awami League under a revised anti-terror law, adding to the pressure on Yunus’s administration.
Calls are mounting for Yunus to announce an election date, as political uncertainty deepens.
