The Srinagar city based jewellers Wednesday observed hunger strike to mark a protest against 1 per cent levy of excise duty on Gold by Government of India.
While talking to KNS, a member of Kashmir Gold Jewellers Association (Anjumani Zargaraan) told KNS that the one (1) per cent levy of excise duty on gold is doesn’t accommodate the aspirations of jewellers. “We appeal Government of India to take immediate steps in this regard so that our genuine demands would get redressed,” he said.
He said that the Jewellers fraternity from Shahr-e-Khaas recently met members of All India Gems and Jewellery Federation in Mumbai to discuss ways for “pressurizing the centre to roll back the excise duty.”
“Since the date we met with the authorities, nothing has been done in this regard. We are being pushed to the walls,” he said, adding that the genuine demands should be redressed at earliest.
Threatening of valley-wide agitation, he said that if the GoI will fail to redress their genuine demands then they will come on streets.
Pertinently, Shahr-e-Khaas-based Jewellers had called for hunger strike on today to protest 1 per cent levy of excise duty on Gold by Government of India.
