Speaking to reporters amid ongoing protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Abdullah defended the Waqf Board’s role in overseeing charitable activities within the Muslim community.

“Charitable activities exist across all religions, and for Muslims, they are facilitated through the Waqf. If one community is selectively targeted, it naturally leads to unrest,” he said.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill has sparked widespread protests, with critics arguing that it interferes in religious and charitable affairs. Various organisations have raised concerns, warning that any restrictions on Waqf properties could have serious consequences.

A parliamentary joint committee, which reviewed the Bill, has submitted its report with several recommended changes. However, opposition members have voiced dissent, alleging that the process was biased in favour of the ruling party. The report was adopted with a 15-11 majority vote, prompting accusations that the amendments aim to weaken Waqf Boards.

The Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha last August by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, is yet to be listed for discussion, but speculation suggests it may be taken up during the ongoing Budget session. As protests continue to intensify, stakeholders are pressing for a thorough review before any legislative action is taken.
