SRINAGAR: Principal District and Sessions Court Srinagar on Wednesday convicted Irshad Ahmad Wani in the acid attack case on a law student at Srinagar’s Nowshera in 2014.

Following arguments presented by Special Public Prosecutor AA Teli and the defence counsel, the court determined the culpability of the accused. It has scheduled a hearing to discuss the sentencing details on Saturday, August 19.

On December 11, 2014, Irshad Ahmad Wani, also known as Sunny, hailing from Srinagar’s Wazir Bagh area, along with Mohammad Omar from Bemina, perpetrated an acid attack on a 21-year-old law student near her college in Nowshera, Srinagar. The assault resulted in severe disfigurement of her face and eyes.

The investigation brought to light that Irshad had been stalking the survivor of the acid attack for a significant period and had proposed to her. However, upon her rejection of his proposal, he took the step of carrying out the acid attack.

The incident garnered strong condemnation from various sectors of society. Consequently, local authorities instructed Deputy Commissioners to enforce bans on the sale of acid within their respective jurisdictions.

Significantly, the duo faced trial on charges under sections 326A (voluntarily throwing acid), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 201 (causing the disappearance of evidence) of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).

Furthermore, on December 17, 2014, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court issued a directive for the government to provide Rs 3 lakh as compensation to the survivor of the acid attack. This sum was to be disbursed by the state, acting through the Chief Secretary and Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, in alignment with the directives of the highest court in the land.
