SRINAGAR: A person has been convicted by a Pulwama court after police recovered a significant amount of contraband from their possession, including over a quintal of “Bangh leaves” and 1.2 kilograms of Charas, in the Kakapora area of south Kashmir district back in 2018.

Principal Sessions Judge of Pulwama, Naseer Ahmad Dar, stated, “The prosecution has successfully established and proven its case against the accused beyond any doubt. I thus find the accused, Abdul Hamid Bhat, guilty of the offence punishable under section 20 of the NDPS Act.” The court is expected to announce the punishment on March 22.

According to the prosecution, on October 7, 2018, the Kakapora police station received information from a credible source regarding Bhat’s concealment of a significant amount of contraband in his residential house at Lelhara, Kakapora, for illegal trade.

Subsequently, the police filed FIR No. 42 of 2018 under sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act. Later, a police team, supervised by DySP HQ, conducted a search at Bhat’s residence, where they discovered nine bags of Bangh leaves and a bag containing Charas powder-like substance. The contraband was weighed in the presence of DySP, totaling 104.4 kilograms from nine bags, with one bag containing 1.200 kilograms of Charas. Bhat was subsequently arrested. (GNS)
