SRINAGAR: Police on Sunday claimed to have solved case relating to theft of cash from donation box of Dastgeer Sahib Shrine.

The spokesman in a statement said that Police in Srinagar have solved theft case of Dastgeer Sahib Shrine by arresting 02 main accused involved in the commission of the particular theft.

“Besides, 03 more accused persons involved in other different burglaries in Srinagar city also arrested. Stolen money from said shrine and other stolen properties worth lakhs have been recovered,” said the spokesman.

“On 10/02/2022, PS Khanyar had received information regarding theft at Dastgeer Sahib Shrine, where unknown thieves had broken the lock of donation box during the intervening night of 9/10 February 2022,” he said, adding that accordingly, case under relevant sections of law was registered and investigation was initiated.

“During the course of investigation, officers by utilizing modern techniques zeroed in on one suspect identified as Tahir Ahmad Mir @90 resident of Harden Kupwara. Accordingly, 02 special teams under the supervision of SDPO Khanyar Shri Mohd Yasser Parrey-JKPS were constituted to nab the culprit,” said the spokesman.

“After strenuous efforts the special teams were able to arrest the said accused person from Lolab area of Kupwara on 13/02/2022,” he said.

He said that during questioning followed by confronting the accused with the technical evidence, he confessed his involvement in the commission of the theft at the said shrine along with another accomplice of his native village, identified as Jaffar Ahmad Mir and subsequently he was also arrested. On their instance, the stolen cash from the donation box amounting to Rs 8090 was recovered so far.

Pertinent to mention here that during the course of investigation, they further disclosed their involvement in other theft cases in city Srinagar along with 03 more associates. Subsequently, the other three accused were also arrested and jewellery items worth lakhs have been recovered from their possession, he added.

Further investigation is in full swing and more arrests and recoveries are expected, said the spokesman
