At least one person was killed and four others injured as Pakistan and Indian border troops resumed firing across the Line of Control (LoC) on Monday.

A 30-year old police constable, Imtiaz, died on the spot after being hit by a mortar shell in Nakyal sector of Muzaffarabad, Dawn.com quoted Assistant Commissioner Nakyal Sardar Zeeshan Nisar as having said.

“There were reports about two more deaths, but Mr Nisar said the administration was awaiting confirmation,” the news report added. “The Indians are ruthlessly targeting civilian populations. Exact losses can be obtained only when the shelling subsides.”

In the north-eastern Neelum valley, the cross border firing hit a vehicle on the main Neelum valley road near Danjar, causing injuries to two passengers, including a young boy. Another person was injured in Falakan village, the news report said.

“The administration was not allowing any tourist in the area, but local residents can carefully travel,” the report said.

Another man, Mohammad Bashir, was injured in Dabsi village of Nakyal sector and referred to DHQ Hospital Kotli, a paramedic told Dawn.com.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has accused India of diverting attention from its “internal failures by repeatedly violating the ceasefire” at the border.

Asif said Indian forces had committed almost 178 ceasefire violations on the Line of Control and the International Boundary this year.

“India is diverting attention from its internal failures by creating tension on the borders,” Asif was quoted by Dawn online.

He said that killings of people in Jammu and Kashmir had “exposed the real face” of India.

The Defence Minister said the armed forces of Pakistan were fully capable of defending every inch of their motherland and alleged that “India was supporting terrorism in the country”.
