Syed Ali Geelani, the Hurriyat patriarch, was locked inside his Hyderpora residence-cum-office on Friday when he tried to march towards historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar.

The joint resistance leadership had asked people to march towards besieged Jamia Masjid located at Nowhatta in Old Srinagar where mandatory congregational Friday prayers have been banned from since July 09, 2016.

Sources in Hurriyat Conference said that Geelani, along with his party activists came out of his room around 12:15 PM to march towards Jamia Masjid.

“But all top police men and other forces personnel had locked the main door of the Geelani’s residence from outside,” sources said. Police have already permanently stationed two vans outside the main gate of Geelani’s house which he uses as office as well.

“Ailing Geelani was forced to wait and return to his room for about 20 minutes,” sources informed. “Thus, the march towards Jamia Masjid was foiled forcibly.”

The action against Geelani, who is under house detention since 2016, comes a day after when J&K Government put Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under detention at his Nigeen residence while as Mohammad Yasin Malik was detained from his Maisuma house.

The trio resistance leaders are spearheading the on-going civil uprising in Kashmir during which they held two meetings, one with the “stakeholders”.

J&K Government imposed curfew in several parts of Srinagar to thwart movement of people towards Jamia Masjid.
