SRINAGAR: The Delhi High Court has directed the Central Government to ensure daily clinical monitoring of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, and ordered that any medical intervention required to address his deteriorating health be provided promptly.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia issued the directions while hearing a public interest litigation seeking urgent medical intervention for Wangchuk.
Observing that “every life is precious”, the court said all efforts should be made by government authorities to protect the life of any citizen.
Taking note of the Centre’s submission that Wangchuk’s health is already being monitored by government doctors and medical experts, the Bench directed that his condition continue to be assessed on a daily basis and that necessary treatment be administered whenever required.
The court appreciated the assurance given by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, that Wangchuk’s health was being regularly monitored and that appropriate medical intervention would be provided based on doctors’ assessments.
The Bench subsequently disposed of the PIL filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini.
The petition had sought directions to the Centre and the Delhi Government to shift Wangchuk to a government hospital, provide necessary medical treatment, including force-feeding through a liquid diet if required, and ensure protection of his life and health.
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since June 28, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities, including the NEET paper leak. His protest is being held in solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-centric political movement.
According to submissions before the court, Wangchuk’s health has deteriorated during the protest, with reports indicating that he has lost more than 8 kg and experienced falling blood sugar levels.
