Army Chief, General Bikram Singh, Monday defended the Arms Forces Special Powers Act for soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir. The act has been under severe criticism by social and human rights activists apart from political parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to a national news channel Gen Singh said the dilution of AFSPA was not required. “AFSPA has been provided to soldiers to operate in highly volatile environment. We should not dilute the provisions of AFSPA,” the channel quoted General Bikram Singh as having said while commenting on the ceasefire violations and killing of soldiers on the LoC.
The statement has come at a time when Chief Minster Omar Abdullah has been advocating for revocation of the Act in some areas in the state. However there has been opposition to Omar’s demands from certain quarters including the Army.
