SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir’s Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Thursday inspected the fourth Tawi bridge, which sustained major damage in recent flash floods, and assured affected residents of full government support in relief and rehabilitation.
The bridge at Bhagwati Nagar was severely impacted after relentless rainfall caused the Tawi river to swell, washing away a portion of the connecting road. Several vehicles had plunged into the gorge from the damaged stretch on Tuesday, officials said as per Daily Excelsior.
Choudhary undertook a whirlwind visit of flood-hit areas in Jammu city before inspecting the site. He said the damage was extensive and repairs would take time, but stressed that the administration was committed to restoring traffic flow and providing timely assistance.
“There is huge loss. It cannot be repaired in a day. It will take time. Omar Abdullah visited the city yesterday, I am here today. This is to assure people that the government will fully support them in relief and rehabilitation,” he told reporters.
Rejecting suggestions of political posturing, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “We are not here for photographs or TRPs. Our aim is to provide relief to people and ensure that traffic is restored on this bridge.”
Choudhary reiterated the Omar Abdullah-led government’s resolve to carry out rehabilitation and infrastructure restoration on a priority basis. He added that if additional resources were required, a formal request would be made to the Centre.
