SRINAGAR: The Ministry of Education has proposed a comprehensive review of the existing arrangements governing the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), citing representations from teachers and other stakeholders as well as directions and observations of the Supreme Court concerning TET requirements.
In an office memorandum, the ministry said the proposed exercise would examine the existing eligibility and qualification framework for TET and issues affecting teachers already in service who are required to obtain the qualification.
The ministry said it had received representations from teachers, teacher associations, educational institutions and other stakeholders regarding implementation of the TET requirement. It has also taken note of the Supreme Court’s directions and observations concerning TET requirements for teachers covered under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
As part of the proposed review, the government intends to consider measures to ensure that TET examinations are held periodically and at reasonable intervals.
The exercise will also examine practical difficulties faced by serving teachers in obtaining TET qualification, according to the memorandum.
The ministry has proposed consultations with State Governments, Union Territory Administrations, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), education experts and other stakeholders as part of the review process.
It will also examine whether amendments to relevant statutory provisions are required in the larger public interest.
The ministry said the proposed review was aimed at developing a transparent, fair and workable framework for determining teacher eligibility.
