SRINAGAR: For the first time, a cargo train carrying cherries is scheduled to operate from Jammu and Kashmir to Mumbai next month.
According to media reports, the Jammu division has received its first VP indent, an official request for a full parcel van, from Katra railway station to Bandra in Mumbai. The train is expected to depart on June 3.
This step follows discussions with the Horticulture Department and fruit growers. It is expected to help reduce pressure on road transport and ensure faster delivery of perishable goods like cherries.
Officials said that 24 tonnes of cargo will be transported in a parcel van attached to a goods train. The consignment is likely to reach Mumbai within 30 hours.
They said the move is expected to benefit both the railway and the fruit industry, while also supporting the local economy.
