SRINAGAR: A fresh wave of youth-led protests erupted in Nepal’s Bara district on Thursday as Gen Z demonstrators returned to the streets, reigniting tensions that flared earlier this week, as per multiple local media reports.
The unrest followed violent clashes on Wednesday between Gen Z protesters and CPN-UML party workers in the Simara area, which escalated into scuffles near Simara Airport. Authorities were forced to impose a curfew to restore order.
The district administration has announced that the curfew will remain in effect until 8 pm local time on Thursday, citing the need to maintain public safety.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki urged calm and appealed to all groups to “refrain from unwanted political provocation” and trust the democratic process ahead of elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.
“I have directed the Home Administration and security agencies to work with utmost restraint and preparation to maintain peace and order,” Karki said as reported by The Kathmandu Post.
It is pertinent to mention that, in September 2025, Nepal witnessed widespread anti-corruption protests, primarily led by Generation Z students and young citizens. Referred to as the “Gen Z protests,” they were triggered by a nationwide ban on several social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp. The demonstrations reflected public anger over corruption, ostentatious displays of wealth by government officials and their families, and alleged mismanagement of public funds.
