JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday said that it currently lacks the funds to undertake road widening and upgradation projects in Srinagar’s Shehr-Khas area. This was revealed in response to a query by Ali Mohammad Sagar, who sought details on the status of various road projects, including those at Koolipora, Khanyar, Bohri Kadal, Rajouri Kadal, Syed Mirakhshah Road from Zakura to Dalgate, and Ali Kadal to Waganpora, Nawakadal.

According to the government, the proposal for widening the Koolipora-Khanyar road section was initially approved under the Core Area Development Programme nearly four decades ago, and some structures along the proposed alignment were acquired. However, the project now requires a revised proposal in line with current rates.
No road widening projects are currently active in the Bohri Kadal and Rajouri Kadal areas. The government stated that the Syed Mirakhshah Road from Zakura to Dalgate had been acquired and widened, but certain stretches, particularly at Nowpora, Khayam, and Habbak, remain pending due to a lack of funds and ongoing court cases.
Similarly, the road from Ali Kadal to Nawakadal via Waganpora has seen limited progress. While some portions have been acquired and widened, a significant part remains unacquired due to financial constraints and legal hurdles.
The government has said that road widening and upgradation projects in Shehr-Khas will only be taken up once resources become available.
