SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that the government will provide five marlas of land to each flood-affected family in Jammu and Kashmir who lost their homes and land due to recent landslides and flash floods. The measure aims to help affected families rebuild their dwelling units on the allotted land.
Omar Abdullah made the announcement while interacting with residents of Duggain, Billawar, whose homes and livelihoods were severely impacted by the recent flooding. Earlier, he conducted an aerial survey of the district’s flood-hit areas, accompanied by MLA Bani, Dr. Rameshwar Singh.
The Chief Minister directed the administration to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation measures, describing 2025 as a year of “immense devastation” for the Union Territory. Torrential rains have damaged over 350 bridges, around 2,000 km of roads, thousands of hectares of agricultural land, standing crops, and both government and private buildings.
Omar Abdullah emphasised the need for first-hand assessment of damages, visiting remote areas in Kathua and conducting aerial surveys of Hiranagar and Lakhanpur. He later held a meeting with district officials, including Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma, directing extensive tours of affected areas and submission of detailed ground reports.
MLA Bani, Rameshwar Singh, highlighted that villages such as Moar, Najote, and Kanthal-Majra have seen nearly 100 families lose land and property. He also raised other issues, including damages to Jalana Bridge, delays in school infrastructure projects, and relief measures such as amnesty on KCC loans and electricity bills.
The Chief Minister assured that the government would review these demands seriously and extend all possible support to the affected families.
