Govt to Focus on Strengthening Existing Health, Education Institutions: Sakina Itoo

SRINAGAR: Health and Medical Education (H&ME) Department Minister Sakina Itoo on Monday said the government is focusing on consolidating and strengthening existing health and educational institutions instead of creating scattered or fragmented facilities.

Speaking during her visit to Beerwah in Budgam district, Itoo stressed the importance of resource optimisation to improve public services. “There is a pressing need to consolidate what we already have, rather than open new, disjointed facilities that often lack basic infrastructure and manpower,” she said.

The minister added that constructing a few rooms does not make a hospital unless there is adequate staff and essential facilities. “Our focus is on strengthening and upgrading existing infrastructure, which will be prioritised after ensuring its effectiveness,” she said.

Addressing concerns about the shortage of doctors in peripheral hospitals, Itoo said all attached doctors have now been detached from their positions and directed to report back to their original postings. “This is necessary to ensure rural and underserved areas receive proper healthcare services,” she said, adding that those failing to comply will face action under the rules.

The minister mentioned the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government over the past seven months but acknowledged that much more remains to be done.

Regarding the demand for a trauma hospital in Budgam, Itoo said the matter is under review, particularly in view of rising road accidents and the lack of immediate specialised care. “The demand has been raised by the MLAs of Beerwah and Chadoora. It will be reviewed, and necessary steps will follow,” she said.

During her visit, the minister interacted with health officials and local residents to assess the current condition of healthcare and educational facilities. She directed officials to prioritise the strengthening of primary health centres and ensure schools are upgraded with adequate staff and proper infrastructure.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Itoo said, “Equitable development and public welfare remain central to our approach.” (KNO)
