SRINAGAR: A 60-year-old woman lost her life, and several properties were damaged across multiple districts of Kashmir on Tuesday evening following sudden gusty winds and heavy rainfall.
As per reports, a woman identified as Saleema Bano, a resident of Wagad Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, died on the spot after a poplar tree fell on her during a strong windstorm. Locals attempted to rescue her but found her dead beneath the fallen tree.
Strong winds and intense rainfall also caused damage in parts of north and central Kashmir. In the Bela Sathri area of Bandipora and parts of Sopore, rooftops of at least five residential houses and two cowsheds were reported damaged. No injuries were reported from these areas.
In central Kashmir’s Budgam district, a mudslide triggered by the rain affected the Receiving Station in the Waterhail area. Local sources reported that several sheep are feared dead, though official confirmation is awaited.
Srinagar city, which experienced one of the heaviest spells, recorded approximately 50 mm of rainfall within four hours. The sudden downpour led to waterlogging in several areas and disrupted normal activities.
Authorities said they are monitoring the situation and that assessment teams have been dispatched to the affected locations.
Jammu and Kashmir had been experiencing heatwave conditions over the past week. However, as per the Meteorological Department, temperatures are expected to drop, with chances of thundershowers, rainfall, and gusty winds likely to continue until the end of the month. (JKNS)
