According to officials, the flight will carry 178 pilgrims, including 96 males and 82 females, marking the start of this year’s pilgrimage from the region.

The Jammu and Kashmir Hajj Committee said that over 3,600 pilgrims from JK are scheduled to perform Hajj this year under the government quota.

Pilgrims scheduled for Sunday’s flight were instructed to report at Haj House, Bemina, between 5:00 and 5:30 AM. Security arrangements at the venue have been tightened, and only registered pilgrims with valid passes will be allowed entry.

Officials said the Hajj departure schedule from Kashmir will run from May 4 to May 15, with a total of 11 flights planned. The final flight on May 15 will carry 321 pilgrims. Pilgrims are expected to stay in Saudi Arabia for 42 to 46 days, depending on their return schedule.

This year’s preparations included three rounds of training and orientation, covering safety measures, religious rituals, and travel guidelines.

A vaccination drive has also been completed. Pilgrims received required vaccines, including those for influenza and polio. They have also been informed about baggage restrictions.

There were concerns following Saudi Arabia’s recent suspension of Umrah, tourist, and visit visas ahead of the Hajj season. However, officials clarified that this was a routine step to prevent the misuse of non-Hajj visas and to ensure proper arrangements for registered pilgrims.

“This step helps reduce overcrowding and logistical challenges, such as those witnessed during Hajj 2024,” said Dr Shujaat Ahmad Qureshi, Executive Officer, J&K Hajj Committee. “Registered pilgrims will now have better access to accommodation and services.”

To facilitate smooth movement, especially for pilgrims from North Kashmir, authorities have arranged a dedicated traffic crossing near the Hajj House in Bemina. (KNO)
