Hakeem Yasin Says JKNC Disrespected Martyrs by Skipping July 13 Tributes

SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) President and former Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen has criticised the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) for offering tributes at the Mazar-e-Shohada a day after the historic Martyrs’ Day, terming it a “disrespect to the martyrs and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Yaseen said that paying homage on July 14 instead of July 13—the date on which 22 Kashmiris were killed by Dogra forces in 1931—undermines the historical and emotional significance of the day. “July 13 holds an irreplaceable place in our history. Observing it on any other date is not only symbolically negligent but also an affront to the spirit of remembrance,” he said.

The former minister questioned the sincerity of the NC leadership, pointing out that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was in Delhi and his Deputy Chief Minister in Jammu on the day of remembrance. “You were well aware of the restrictions, but that doesn’t justify staying away. Political leaders must be present in both spirit and action,” Yaseen remarked.

Referring to widely circulated visuals showing Omar Abdullah scaling the wall of the Mazar-e-Shohada to enter the premises, Yaseen called it “inappropriate” and evidence of a “casual approach” to what should have been a solemn occasion. “This is not a matter of optics. Ordinary citizens may visit the shrine any day, but for leaders, symbolism and timing carry deeper meaning,” he added.

Yaseen accused the National Conference of manipulating historical observances for political mileage. “This is not the first time they have turned legacy events into political theatre. It’s time they introspect. Our collective memory must not be used as a campaign platform,” he said.

Yaseen called on all political parties to resist the temptation of symbolic gestures and instead demonstrate genuine commitment to preserving the dignity, history, and democratic aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
