SRINAGAR: As the Kashmir Valley prepares for the onset of Chilla-i-Kalan, the harsh 40-day winter period beginning on December 21, the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, will organise Jashn-e-Chilla-i-Kalan, a cultural event aimed at showcasing the region’s traditional craftsmanship.

The two-day event will be held on December 20 and 21 at Kashmir Haat (Numaish Gah) in Srinagar and will coincide with the observance of Pheran Day on December 21, according to a spokesperson of the department.
The event will feature dedicated stalls displaying Kashmiri handicrafts, with a special emphasis on traditional zari embroidery, also known as tilla work, and aari (hook) embroidery. These crafts are commonly used to embellish the traditional Pheran, the Valley’s iconic winter garment.
Noted craftsmen from various parts of the Valley have been invited to participate and will offer live demonstrations of hand embroidery. Visitors will also be able to view and purchase hand-embroidered Pherans, Pashmina shawls and other winter wear, providing an opportunity to interact directly with master artisans.
The spokesperson said the initiative aims to highlight the resilience of Kashmiri traditions during the coldest phase of winter while promoting the cultural and practical significance of the Pheran, which offers warmth and comfort during extreme cold.
Describing the event as a celebration of Kashmir’s cultural heritage, the department said it is expected to draw locals, tourists and craft enthusiasts alike. Members of the public have been encouraged to attend the event and support local artisans, as the festival seeks to promote the Valley’s handloom and embroidery traditions.
